Frequently Asked Questions

MEMBERS COACHES COMPANIES FOR NON-PROFITS

For Members

  • SC creates a space (cohorts) of belonging for early career professionals from diverse and historically underrepresented communities.

    You will:

Meet, network, and learn from other first-generation college graduates in the U.S.

Have a like-experienced coach with 7+ years of work experience, both in the cohort setting and for 1:1 individual coaching

Gain tools, resources, and confidence to support your work life and career journey.

  • Success Cohorts does not cost anything for the individual member. Your participation is paid for by your company or by scholarship. If your company supports professional development, please meet with Betti Fujikado (betti@firstgencohorts.com) to talk more about it.

  • We build our cohorts based on where you feel a sense of belonging, e.g., first generation, BIPOC, and/or other aspects of your identity important to you. All participants are in early career, seeking career coaching and community.

Each cohort is made up of 5-7 like-experienced individuals and we try to have 2-3 cohorts starting at one time to get to know an even larger community. We look for individuals from private, nonprofit, and public sectors who represent a rich diversity in terms of race, gender, profession, and other intersections of identity.

When joining the three-month program, we also invite you to join our Linkedin Community of alumni, alumni from our nonprofit partners, among others.

    Meet The Team

  • We meet virtually to make it easier for you to “commute” to the session. There are occasional opportunities to meet in-person for social events or other gatherings.

  • Our members are asked to commit about 10-12 hours a month to this program. However, our program structure is purposefully flexible to accommodate the needs and commitments of our members and coaches. It includes twelve 90-minute weekly sessions, (3+) 1monthly chats with coaches, and pre-session preparation that takes between 30-60min to complete.

”Success Cohorts not only gave me a community post-college that was uplifting and supportive, but the program also allowed me to have a deeper introspection into myself and my goals for my career. My life changed the day I applied!”

For Coaches

  • Coaches are paid a $3,000 stipend, $1,500 after the first 6 sessions and $1,500 at the end. We ask that you meet with our coaching lead (Carla), prepare for sessions, attend sessions, hold 1:1s monthly with each cohort member, and participate in our Success Circles* from time to time.

    * Success Circles are our opportunity for input from insiders (coaches and program managers), influencers (interested individuals), participating nonprofits, and companies/organizations interested in moving our program forward.

  • Coaches have 7+ years of demonstrable career success, a desire to support other like-experienced individuals earlier in their careers, and from a variety of industries, nonprofits, and other organizations.

We have had a Tacoma School Board member, Sr. Consultant at Deloitte, and an Assistant Director at the University of Washington.

  • We meet virtually to make it easier for you to “commute” to the session. There are occasional opportunities to meet in-person for social events or other gatherings.

  • Our coaches commit about 15 hours a month, depending on the size of the cohort. Our program structure is purposefully flexible to accomodate members’ and coaches’ schedules. There are twelve 90-minute weekly sessions, 3-6 monthly 1:1 sessions with each cohort member, and pre-session assignments taking between 30-60 min to complete.

  • Yes, typically SC receives more coach applications than positions available. We are encouraged by this as it shows how coaches want to give back to their communities. Those not accepted are encouraged to reapply again, and there are also other ways to be involved with SC through mentoring and speaking.

“Serving as a coach for the FGC Beta Cohort has been incredibly rewarding. I was inspired by every member as well as my fellow coaches and feel grateful to be a part of this growing and much needed community. The connections made in just 6 months have blossomed into longtime friendships.”

“Anyone looking for an #upgrade to the #internship experience your company provides, consider using First Gen Cohorts. They help your interns quickly adjust from an academic to a professional environment, and contribute much quicker! Also, feedback Violett received was that our interns felt taken care of and learned a lot more than they would have ‘on the job.’”
